Vacuum Insulation in the building sector - Efficient and Ecologic

The big advantage of vacuum insulation panels is that it needs extremely less space. This property makes it possible to insulate in areas whereas it has not been sufficient before with conventional insulation materials. Vacuum insulation panels can close formerly inevitable thermal bridges. The resulting lower energy consumption for heaters or air conditions helps the environment and saves expenses. In many countries in the world low energy consumption buildings are promoted by state institutions. This further decreases investments for state of the art insulation technology and results in very short payback periods. We like to support you in your calculation model. In addition to that VIPs make it possible to realise architectural buildings with high insulation standards with nearly no limitations (check for example our VIP "Sandwichpaneel"). For example Steps can be avoided when VIPs are used to insulate terraces without any negative effects on the insulation performance. This is not possible with conventional insulation materials.

Another big advantage comes from the circumstance that living spaces in urban areas are getting more and more pricy. With the use of vacuum insulation panels it is possible to save space without negative effects on the insulation performance. It is an easy calculation: With conventional insulation material roughly 5 times more space would be needed for the same insulation performance in comparison to vacuum insulation panels. Therefore 5 times more space will be available when using VIPs in urban areas. That means this efficient technology could lead to more space without effects on the energy consumption. More space means more square meter for the resident and therefore a significant higher value of the building. The cash payback can be extremely fast especially in dense areas such as New York City, London or Tokyo.

With our vakuVIP vacuum insulation technology it is possible to insulate more efficient and more ecological than ever. The product does not contain any harmful or toxic substances. The core is for example made of the biggest part of silica. This substance is also used in food products and is totally physiological. Our VIPs are made completely in our factory in Germany. We take care of an energy efficient and sustainable production. Residuals of the core material can be recycled for example. In addition to that we  generate green energy with our solar panels on the roof of our production facility.

Pitched roof

Vacuum insulation panels are ideally suited for pitched roof applications.

The advantage: lower insulation layer installation with maximum insulation.

Carrier plates are fixed to the roof truss and vakuVIP elements screwed thereon using a batten grid.

The batten grid prevents the insulation from slipping, and is the attachment point for the planking and subsequent covering.
Insulation elements are inserted into this grid, and the coating layer is covered with a waterproof laminated sheet material. The outer layer of the roof covering can be laid on top of this.

This quick and easy installation results in a high-quality insulated roof.

Roof dormers

Especially in monument protection, the thickness of dormer insulation plays an essential role regarding construction and statics.

Installation thickness is minimised with ultra-high-performance insulation from Vaku-Isotherm. This leads to a weight reduction and the easy achievement of insulation values in the low energy range.
In the roof area, the extent of installation can be reduced to a minimum despite maximum insulation specifications.

The example here shows the application in a dormer for monument protection purposes.
Given the original specification, however, conventional insulation materials would not yield optimum insulation. Indeed, the requirement was to use the newly created space as a fully insulated space, in accordance with the latest energetic considerations.

Suitable Products:

External walls

Effective conventional exterior wall insulation should be 150-200 mm thick in order to save energy effectively. The house "grows" in width with its insulation, roof overhangs disappear, window frames become so-called loopholes, and less light comes into the rooms. Soffits are often shabbily insulated and, along with the roller shutter boxes, become the cold bridges of the future.

Not so with vakuVIP installation panels. They achieve comparable results with a 30mm thickness. Complete with insulated soffits, an historic building without much space can quickly receive insulation values similar to a passive house.

Installation is simple. They are glued to the facade with a conventional mortar adhesive, doweled in the area of the circumferential EPS insert edge band, trowelled with plaster netting, and then plastered. The vakuVIP panel is particularly suited for insulating doorways, where there are often only a few centimetres of leeway in width and height. Or think of the external insulation of overhanging ceilings; if inhabited rooms are located above them conventional insulation installation generally requires too much space. In this respect, this insulation system is particularly advisable in the area of monument protection and renovations.

Suitable Products:

Facade panels

The ultra-high-performance insulated sandwich panel works as an installation-ready construction component. With this solution, the panel is just as thick as the standard glazing, and integrates easily into window, door, conservatory and facade constructions.

The panel has better insulation values than the insulating glass being used. Therefore, they are ideally suited for low or zero-energy solutions for facades. The circumferential EPS insert edge band between the respective surface layers in the marginal area allows for optimum insertion of the sandwich panel, absorbing the desired seal pressure. The panel is not translucent.

Floors

Floor construction in interior rooms
The installation height with 20mm of vakuVIP has a thickness of approx. 50 mm, including tile or parquet

Installation
Pre-primed, two layers of bonded plaster fibreboard, fleece, vakuVIP in the intended thickness, fleece, vapour barrier, underground concrete surface, primedTo achieve higher insulation values, vakuVIP can also be installed as a double layer.

Suitable Products:

Floors with underfloor heating

Conventional insulation systems result in excessive installation height for floor heating when effective insulation is sought.

When using 20mm vakuVIP, however, the installation of the floor heating system and ceramic tile is just approx. 85 mm. To achieve higher insulation values, vakuVIP can also be installed as a double layer.

Floors with parquet flooring/laminate

Low installation height, high insulation results, easy-to-install - advantages of our vacuum insulation products

When using 20mm vakuVIP, the installation of the floor is just approx. 85 mm. To achieve higher insulation values, vakuVIP can also be installed as a double layer and in other thicknesses.

Suitable Products:

ultraVIP terrace insulation

This is actually a combination of our existing products vakuVIP SP-2/E and vakuVIP Gum-1, which uses a 15 mm PUR surface layer instead of a polystyrene panel.
Special feature: The 50 mm PUR insert edge band allows modification(trimming) of edges up to 30 mm.
Today, we also offer an insulation panel which was specifically designed for the terrace and flat roof area. It is characterised by a vacuum insulation core with low thermal conductivity of 0.008 W/m2K, and an extremely low installation height of only 38-63 mm.

Suitable Product:

Terraces & flat roofs

Here you can see examples of a complete installation for flat roof and terrace insulation, which provides a highly efficient insulation with our vakuVIP vacuum insulation panels.

There is also an advantage in terms of low construction height, which is of the utmost importance for terraces with residential premises below them.

The height of the interior floor is identical to that of the terrace floor. In this way, you can have a level balcony door exit.

Roller shutter boxes

In most thermographic readings of houses, cold bridges repeatedly appear in the area of roller shutter boxes. If you consider the installation position (left figure), this is not surprising. There is a point in the living space where there is actually an outer wall that is insulated with only 20 mm of polystyrene. In this case, lintel and soffit also lack insulation most of the time.

You can see the solution in the figure to the right. The soffit is insulated with the vakuVIP 28 mm installation panel while vakuVIP Protekt-2 23mm thick assumes the function of the outer wall in the roller shutter box. This results in a continuous insulation system, which provides the same values as the external wall insulation.

Suitable Products:

Wall connection of lamellar blind boxes

Lamellar blind boxes are often integrated into the thermal insulation facade of new buildings. The result is a flush facade, whereby the lamellar blind box or outside roller shutter box is not visible. In most cases, this leads to a very large cold bridge to the masonry due to the size of the lamellar blind system or roller shutter box. Using vakuVIP Protekt-2, the same U-value is achieved with a thickness of only 23 mm, as with the rest of the wall insulation.

Suitable Products:

Wood frame construction

There is often little space available for integrating effective insulation for timber-frame restoration or wood stand construction, without having a long-term negative affect on the optics of these houses. With our vacuum insulation systems, you are choosing an energetically high-quality and space-saving solution. We manufacture the vacuum insulation panels in accordance with your substructure grid or with the timber frame, with which the VIPs are then integrated. In timber construction, for example, vakuVIP panels are placed between the substructure batten and then covered in wood or facade panels.
